Who reads this forum ?

Do you read EVERYTHING ?

OR do you skip-over threads
....like gigs that you can not go to
....or technical subjects....or random thoughts ?

How often do you check the forum ?
Is it still fun ?
Do you feel that you have made friends here ?

Is anyone surprised that a music forum could
produce such great friendships ?

I want to go to at LEAST one of the UK
gigs and bring everyone some delightful smoked salmon !

That is my secret dream.

It is really good.
There is an amazing cannery here.

There are so many varieties !
I just can not get enough !!!!
And around here, it is a gift of high respect.

Dicky and Adrian, I feel like I
cheaped-out on the actual smoked salmon when
you were here. I will make it up.

I thought that the gig on the reserve would produce better
results than cold dead heavy pizza.

Advantages of playing keyboards for Pink Floyd

1) Easy desk job
2) You get writing credits on the biggest selling albums ever.
3) You get year-long vacations between tours.
4) The drummer seems nice.
6) You get to play your mini-moog in quad.
5) The bass player does all the actual work.
8) You get to see The Beatles record LOVELY RITA.
9) The only people who know who you are are so hard-core
that they would not even believe it if they saw you in Walmart.
9) um........$
10) endless $$


Th sad part about the gig:

1) You have to plow through years of jamming
before Echos Part 1 finally gets written.
2) You don't get to wear anything flashy or wild on stage.
3) You do not get to smile on stage.
4) The other guys in the band are always mad at you.
5) Some journalists are disappointed because they
thought they were interviewing Wakeman.
6) When fans bake nice cookies for you,
chances are they have too much pot in them.
7) You have to do your own laundry because there
is no wardrobe person amongst the army of technicians.
8) When The Soft Machine opened, you thought it said 'Soft Margarine"
and you had already put the toast in.
9) Syd Barrett became way more famous than you and all he did
for years was get his picture taken while taking little bags
of garbage out of him Mom's house.
10) The drummer won't let you drive any of his wild cars.

I am watching all the you-tube videos
of singing birds, and the keepers are terrible.

There was someone, all super proud, on TV,

If you see something anything close to
that in Canada,
there is a REALLY good chance that
it was Government Grant money.

There is an EAST COAST MUSIC AWARDS show,
and it is just grant-mania.....every act is a major
grant-pig. And the local "industry" has to promote
itself....or they will stat to not get all those grants.

And the only way to GET a grant is to be IN
with someone who already gets them.

I could not get one to save my life....

can I share a little show-bizz trick ?

What you do is put some children in your act,
whatever it is....a play...ok ?.

That way, no matter how terrible you show is,
you will get a decent reception.

Nobody is ever allowed to BOO kids.....

musician #5 friendships like he used to have in high-school

IMHO theres only one thing.... Happiness, If you have that then nothing else matters. I have a friend He works all hours for little money Loves his wife Totally, Has two very well mannered kids. They just enjoy life like no one i have met, He NEVER complains about anything. How amazing would it be to be like that !!! Oh well time to flog the kids for speaking without permission AGAIN....

Sure.
But for whom ?
And at what expense ?
How does out Happiness affect others ?
Happiness NOW on this spaceship or for eternity ?


The KING, having a great time while people suffer.
The ADDICT having a great time while his parents suffer.
The WIFE happy while living another life secretly.
The MERCHANT happy while gas prices go up and up.


Can we somehow BE happy
while making others happy at the same time ?

And would it not be nice as well to have some
emotional, physical and mental stability at the same time ?



I think it all comes down to really bad pizza on the reserve.
balance breeds happiness

and Justice is a bonus too.

My friend if there's any justice you will be happy !!!! I was addicted to Roxy Music as a child my mum suffered due to repeated plays of the Bogie man (as she called it) from viva !!! Given that this is a total gas are we merchants (careful dicky !!!!)

Just watched a couple youtube videos from 2011 - Dead of Night, Caesar's, Danger Money, from neilstabell. They were spot ON. Check them out if you haven't seen 'em. Gave me goosebumps. Last year Roger Waters returns The Wall and now this ! 1979, 80 returns in 2012 like it never left. I'm 54 going on 24 right now !!!

Good question ! I think if you are constantly stressed it is difficult for those around you to be truly happy. In my own experience a strong character is capable of bringing the mood of a whole house up or down depending on that persons state of mind. I spoke to my friend about this thread last night and asked him "why are you so bloody happy all the time" although he couldn't really answer my theory is that he's never been unhappy and doesn't realise how satisfying it can be !!!!!!! Maybe it's about loving yourself which in turn would enable you to love others therebye achieving some happiness for you and your loved ones. Can I get off the couch now Dr gOgO

Of course.
But you have to decide if it all matters or not.

If you play drums for UK,
and people enjoy UK
then you should also have fun doing so.

If you ARE happy
you are more likely to affect others that way.
That is your gift to the world.

Everything you do is important.
It is a good thing to keep a good vibe.

If you drive a truck,
feel the power.

If you walk in the rain,
BE the rain.

HAPPY SUNDAY !


Yesterday I invited eight friends over,
including one who had never held a guitar before.

Everyone else knew the two chords I had taught them
.....so welcome to the Sunday guitar circle !!

I had a fire going and we sat and passed around
eight different 6 and 12-strings as I guided everyone
through one and two-chord songs.

I also worked on groove with bongos, Pink Floyd songs,
old old folk.....lunch, dinner...the whole thing lasted 6-hours.

One foster-child said that it was the best Sunday he had ever had.
I liked it too and can barely wait to move it al to the beach in
several months from now.....

HEY we just rocked a fund-raiser at the chruch basement...
EAT YOUR WAY AROUND THE WORLD.....
10 food booths and about 400 people....hey....I was on a DATE !!!!!

I volunteered by leading the sing-along with loud old folk songs.
Kids danced and sang and I scored tons of leftovers for the kids here.

I not sure what century it is, but suddenly I LIKE IT.

Whatever it takes to keep the vibe alive....I'm IN.

Jean Michel Jarre Oxygene 4 TopPop TV Studio

The big grey and brown modular synth is an
ARP 2500 ....like the one used for the sequences
on the first UK album (the high twinkle-notes after
the ALASKA intro)....pretty neat.

This is the only arp synth that I know of Eddie using.

Gogo - let me interject, the 'twinkle notes' were a Triadex Muse, given to me by John Entwistle (it was a speeded-up version of the "Light of Day" sequence with Roland Space Echo delay). Trident Studios big ARP 2500 was the main synth used in the electronic section of "Nevermore." The fat sequencer sound during that section and at the very end could only be from a giant modular. The ring modulator hits in that section were CS-80, and the vocal sustain was literally a tape loop on two machines.

I used the smaller ARP 2600 with Zappa, as well as his huge modular Emu and several other keyboards that I will let you guys speculate about.

Emerson, Wakeman, and I (if I may put myself in the same group) all played the Hammond C3. The "C" model ("church") was the exact same instrument as the B3, but with the ornate church-furniture wooden body that went to the ground - as opposed to the legs of the B3. A piece of little-known trivia that I may have mentioned before is that my first Hammond C3, the one that I am pictured playing on the "Air Cut" album (at age 17), was sold to Jon Lord when I joined Roxy Music. It was the famous Deep Purple Hammond from 1973 to this day, now played by my old friend and former London neighbor Don Airey.

You are absolutely right about the Hohner Pianet - used with Fat Grapple, Curved Air, Roxy Music, and the so-called "piano" credit on King Crimson's 'USA' album which was actually the Pianet through a Big-Muff fuzz-box doubling all the power riffs.

Very interesting stuff. Wish i knew more about keyboards and the technical stuff ( Im not going to try to make up for that by making jokes about the Big Muff Fuzz box either gOgO !!!) Emily has just told me that her college band are playing Love is the Drug at a gig in a few weeks !!! Shes been trying to get them all into 70s/80s stuff for months now as shes into Steve Harley (Hideaway and Cavaliers in particular) and all the stuff i was listening to in my teens !! I think shes hoping for a masterclass on the road so she can play some UK tunage. gOgO and i played Talking old soldiers by Elton John when we visited the manor and Em is going to play and sing that as her solo piece I cant wait to see that. Im so very proud of her.

Some great original parts by Eddie, and that wonderful soaring guitar part by Alex, and the off-the-charts playing by Marco, are among the highlights.

Which version do you own? I've got the Castle Communications-version from 1990 (CLACD 342) and at 2:57 a short wind-sequence interrups the pianopiece, but after that Eddie starts playing again with those typical runs that remind me of Metamorphosis from Air Cut.

some coincidences are strange.
Dennis had said to me that Larry would have to leave the show early to get to Tokyo for his flight which was about midnight, and he'd already had one rail faux pas, going north steada south or something.
The stupid old bloke from Billingham said "Ah... an international "time traveller" he'll get home the day before he left Narita"
as we now see his onward was booked without this fundamental truth being understood!
Had 24 hours to kill in LA.
Could have had another Gig in Kawasaki instead.

My 9 year old son and I are on vacation right now at the new Legoland Florida and we just got out of seeing Lego Racers 4D, a Star Wars inspired computer animated short scored by Eddie. Eddie's orchestral soundtrack is marvelous--with rhythms, themes, harmonies and sounds that match the characters and scenes so exquisitely well. If you are ever in a Legoland park, you must see this. It's my second time hearing the soundtrack, after watching it in Legoland California a few years ago. My son, who is now a bonafide fan after seeing the Baltimore UK show, and is now composing music on Noteflight.com, said to me "Eddie Jobson is awesome!" as we exited the theater.

I built my son a step made from the little yellow and blue bricks, he used it to get in and out of the bath !!!! Recently we took it apart as we needed the pieces TO BUILD a life size effigy of gOgO... Now he hasnt got a Lego to stand on !!!

Canada Day a TON of fun....very festive and happy,
with everyone dressed-up....if you see some TV footage
it is always funny.

We are a very young nation (one hundred and thirty-something years)
and probably the best little (big) buddy for the USA.

Today we are in Vernon B.C......much like California, HOT,
with a soundcheck soon.... in an hour for the
FUNTASTIC MUSIC FESTIVAL...Lou Gramm played last
night and it rained rained rained....so I hear....I was in DaysLand.

I am so happy that I got to hear UK again, and realize
once again how technical and smooth of a player Eddie is, as opposed
to the big bag of mush that I make every gig out here...haha

It is all good....there is room for everything....
in fact it is FUNTASTIC !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

HAPPY (belated) 4th of July

Eddie was telling us that he saw the fireworks in Battery
Park (right ?) New York City 1976 of the huge Bicentennial.

I loved the American Bicentennial.
It was fun; all the music and great TV and cultural stuff that summer.
And, in my opinion, the best issue of MAD magazine ever published.

I can see how Eddie fell in Love with the USA that year.
(I figure)......as many English people are attracted to the openness
and the energy of that big emerging Nation.

Members of Elton Johns band....and John Lennon....plenty of other British musicians settled into the states, hey.....Jack Landcaster...Keith Emerson...
the Supertramp guy...

I always thought that was interesting, as opposed to how many musicians
move from California to England, and stay there.

Ronnie James Dio was born in Portsmouth. New Hampshire (USA). His family moved to Cortland, New York early in his life. Dio considered himself a New Yorker. I do not think he even lived in England at any point in his life even though he played with Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow and Black Sabbath.

For those into music trivia, Jobson auditioned to play keyboards with Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow in 1977, but was not selected for the job by Blackmore.

Ok, so Ronnie James Dio was not born in England; and if you examine Gogo's list, there are clearly other instances where he has played fast-and-loose with quantifiable data. For example, it's a well-documented fact that neither Honky or Fonky were born in England ... I believe they are from Scotland, or possibly Pakistan ... Dicky and/or Adrian would know for certain, being that they are much more dedicated fans than I.

As I have mentioned elsewhere, that particular piece of Wikipedia trivia, enpdlip, conveys an inaccurate portrait of events. I was not there to "audition" for Rainbow because I wanted to be in the band (I had repeatedly insisted I did not want to be in the band); it was, in fact, the members of Rainbow and their management that were trying hard to convince both me and Ritchie that I should join the band, and that if we just played together it would seal the deal (it did not). I do know that I handled a slightly awkward situation with a lot less rudeness than Mr. Blackmore, who - due to that single encounter - remains near the top of my list of the most obnoxious people I have met in this business.

A more relevant piece of trivia regarding Ronnie James Dio is that he and I were brief friends around the time we recorded the semi-hit "Love is All" together. In stark contrast, Ronnie will always remain among the nicest people I have met in this business.

Holdsworth moved to Southern California sometime after the release of his album IOU in the early-mid 1980s. He even worked at a bicycle shop in the area for a while.

I believe his connection to pubs is a beer pump for kegs he invented to obtain a creamy head similar to the ales of his home country.

Oh I love when RANDOM THOUGHTS rules the forum !

1) I like the Rainbow story, and it is up for
"longest sentence" award once we reinstate the EJ FORUM AWARDS.

I guess Richie was feeling a bit threatened by the young talented guy.
Total '70s attitude scene, hey.

My friend Dave Stone took the keyboard gig with Rainbow about that
time...he has permanent hearing damage just from the stint he did.

All he ever could say was just how LOUD it was (and what exactly
was hidden in some of those road cases.)

2) I like the idea of the virtuoso prog bicycle shop, (if it was a good vibe).

I insist that it is a good thing for serious musicians to have at
least one completely unrelated interest....one that is hands-on.

3) I had a friend who lived next door to Dio in the '80s and said
that he was the nicest and most fun guy. For sure.

4) The idea of being a nice guy in the bizz, is a good idea.

I really only hang out with Canadian musicians, (cos I don't get out
much), but everyone is really decent and friendly.

From Bryan Adams, April Wine, the Nazareths....everyone is fun, always.
Fred Turner from BTO is probably the nicest guy in rock music.
Randy Bachman is nice, but in his own world.

The American guys are cool too...Mark Farner, the Tubes...
but FONKY......he is dangerous.

Missing everyone....have been run off of

I am at the tip of NewFoundland
and there is a factory here
that turns ice burgs into drinking water.

I had some today, 10 000 year old pure water
(tastes like the stuff in my hometown !)
and they had some still-frozen chunks backstage as well.

The Polar Bears travel on the Bergs,
funny cos they could end up anywhere hey...

They had an iceburg the size of Manhattan this year,

A real shame that another great musician has to focus on protecting his output at the cost of his career. I know he comes across as awkward and exacting but my abiding memory is of him crying for fully 30 minutes on his wife Toyah's episode of This is your life. He seemed devoted to her.

Yeah...it is has been an amazing year of adventures for all of us....

My Dad started smoking when he was six.
1931....

Unlce Rolie got him started.
(who, by 1974 had lost both legs due to bad circulation)....

Word was that "nobody ever thought that there was anything wrong with it
at the time"....well they also drove logging trucks with no brakes....ok ?

My Dad had smoked 3 packs a day (chain-smoking)...and thenquit after 30 years.

THEN he turned to fish and chips.

For myself....I shunned smoking and went straight for the fish and chips.

This is a good day.. Just got this in the house:

Korg M1 (not working properly - need repairs), Korg M1R, Korg 01/W, Emu Proteus FX, Emu Proteus Classic Keys, Frontline X-8 mixer, Sony DSP M7 sound processor - and a proper oldschool ARP Pro Soloist!!!

The ARP is a loan, the rest I got for free. The EMU's, mixer and M1R is mounted in a rack system.

I got an M1 from before.. I will use this one as spares.. or maybe fix it up and see if my dad wants it :)

The ARP is in mint condition.. Just calibrated and adjusted to perfection.
I just had to tune it as it was a bit too high, but now its 100% perfect :)

I think I have that issue somewhere.

I can try to scan it soon if I find it. I remember the interviewer asking Eddie about the complex time signatures in his work and Eddie replying that he didn't think in those terms, that he was simply trying to convey emotion in his music. Or something like that. I've never forgotten this. It seems to be the kind of thing that separates great progressive musicians such as Eddie from other progressive musicians whose music comes off to me as mechanistic, contrived, and cold.
