Right on....I guess !!!!

....my guess....same thing.....upright piano
with a microphone in it......ROCK ON !!!!!!!!!!

Not a grand because they only played
school halls and had to actually
carry the British Birdcage piano
in a retired bread van
to the halls where they opened for
.....um...Rare Earth (?)

But I bet there was a Hohner Pianet at
a few of the gigs....not just to be cool

...but simply because was
it written into the British Constitution
that every band from 1965 until 1975
had to use one. Crimson included.

PS do we really have to wait until tomorrow to
talk about Curved Air ?

MAGNIFICENT !!!
Thank you !!

(I love Air Cut because it as made the same year as my super fast VW Beetle !)

For Curved Air:
Grand piano......(whatever big beauty they had at Advision Studios)

Hohner Pianet .....(I can not say where...but what the heck hey !!!
....and I bet that is what they had live....)

VCS3.....(subtle, but it is there.)

Hammond organ (B3?).....yes B3 (BAND3 as opposed to CATHEDRAL3)

Mellotron.......(YEAH !!!! Strings on UHF....the end of Armin.....really good too !!!!!
Oh and flutes behind the piano solo on Metamorphosis...recorded late at night after Kirby
caught the train back to his pad and the others were outside even though it was winter.)

BONUS:
..and heavily-muted Harpsichord on Elfin Boy...of is that a muted Clavinet ?....nobody knows.

And what have we for the middle eight (middle-more-than-eight)
swing section of EASY ?
Like an RMI Rocksichord....yes....I bet it is.

It is a great '70s rock album.
Too bad about Emlee Jane though.
She never had time to explain, for sure.

I'll do the easiest one, though it isn't a band.
Theme of Secrets: Synclavier (was it the PSMT?)

You know, Eddie's band-by-band gear would be great material for his Wikipedia entry...
He's already mentioned in the Wikipedia entry for the Synclavier:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synclavier

Im guessing it was the PSMT version. I mentioned the Synclavier for Eddie at one point (dont remember why, when or where) and he said "yes, I have the early polyphonic one"...
I think the PMST version was an upgrade to the early systems because the FM was mono and PMST upgraded it to be in stereo... but Im no Synclavier expert.. hehe

...are you sure there is Synclav on that album ?

(As far as being an expert goes....I am still
working on the pronunciation of the word)

HAY ...I mean HEY.....

Anyone wish to make a start at the
ROXY MUSIC rig today ?

(It was not until UK that Eddie
and designed and supplied his own custom rig....)

ROXY MUSIC.....

For Roxy:

Clavinet D6
Mellotron M400
Hammond L100? (I've seen pics with a very "small" Hammond organ.. Must be from the L-series)
VCS3
ARP Pro Soloist?
Farfisa Professional organ (usually played by Bryan or Andy)

Anyone got more to add to this list?

Cool THANK YOU !

ROXY MUSIC I know little about....
but let's give this a spin................

Clavinet D6....why not hey ! And I think there was the Clav's twin..Hohner Pianet,
Lest ROXY be accused of being Anti-British (playing a German Instrument)...

Mellotron M400...YEAH YEAH YEAH !!!!!....strings and brass...(?)
and also a Mark V (double 'tron at one gig) COOL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hammond L100? (I've seen pics with a very "small" Hammond organ.. Must be from the L-series
....sure ! Sounds like fun ....GENESIS used the L100 M-whatever all along as well. B3 means BIG3...you know...

VCS3....right on....glad I did not have to bust you on this one !!
Eddie knew the VCS3 from Curved Air and ran his clear silver violin through it this time. Artsy stuff...freak out the audience....
(Pink Floyd did OK with one as well.)

ARP Pro Soloist?...HEY my fave synth !!! ...ROXY used one ? really... cool !
....I like !!!

Farfisa Professional organ (usually played by Bryan or Andy) ...yeah and they drone on
it while saying that Eddies violin solo is too long.

What else ?
Piano in the studio......Triadex Muse to play over the phone at 4 am
to drive everyone insane....(that is my plan anyway).....

GOOD GIG !!!

and isn't that a Pro Solist on the top?

OK... Zappa then:

ARP 2600
EML Synkey (extremely cool synth... hear it on the beginning on "Cruisin' For Burgers")
Clavinet D6
Minimoog
EMU modular system of some kind..
EML Electrocomp 101? (I know Tommy Mars had one.. did Eddie use one too?)
Acoustic Piano...
Solina String Ensemble
Fender Rhodes

Any ideas?

Ok Mia, I think you nailed it.

Editing your post and adding the Rhodes was good,
because I was going to jump-in with that !

I am not a huge-enough Zappa fan to dig a whole lot
deeper into what is what, but I think you are right-on.

I am pretty sure that Tommy Marrs used the EMU modular system
as well, mainly for a french horn sound with lots of filter twisting.
I saw that version of the band and they were amazing.

This the first Eddie first Mini Moog attack, as we know...
which is also really good.

I have no idea what it what on Studio Tan, but it is all excellent.

-----------------------------------
The 2600.....I read that this is the machine that got Patrick O'Hearn
all synth-happy around the same time.

The 2600 is my personal favorite synth. I just love everything about it.
I still have never had one, but I spent as much fun time as could at a
friendly studio playing with one; which was eventually sold to the bass
player from The Red Hot Chili Peppers. (my friend also gave the guy
a hand full of patch-cables, and the response was "what are those for ?")

I tried to buy one off of Fred Turner (from Bachman Turner Overdrive),
but he already sold his.

What is it with bass players and 2600s !?!?!?!?

Anyway, I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE that photo of the white one !
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I knew they were grey, black, and my fave, the last ones; black with orange.

I love all the ARP stuff.
Who doesn't !?!?!?

Hehe.. Yeah.. I guess I nailed some of it...
I almost forgot the Rhodes, but then it came to me after I head "Lšther" again a few days ago, so I had to add it.

ARP synts are great. Never had any fun with a real 2600, but I've had some fun with the Axxe, Odessey, Pro Soloist and Little Brother.
The white 2600 in the pic is recently restored. It used to be grey.. It looks superb!

Back in the 80's while in college in Puerto Rico I had the chance to play with a 2600 and a Rhodes Chroma. The music dept. there had these two machines and I remember spending many hours playing those amazing instruments. Now, if I could only go back there and buy them, yet I suspect they no longer have them...

Hi all,

Mia, the Hammond on the Roxy picture is probably not an M-102 since I compared it to mine (or it must be a newer model built after 1963). So my guess is it is an L-model?

And when we get to UK - which version, 1 or 2 ? Pre-production of 1 or touring version of 1 ?

I do not think the
Prophet was made then,
unless you are talking about
The Prophet Isaiah.

Hey and yes,
UK is the next band.
ah ha !

Can we start with
pre-pdoduction Mark 1 ?

Well... P-5 came out in 1977 and I thought I recalled EJ mention it in the Keyboard Mag interview... but not having had a copy for a long time I cant check. He had one for DM of course, but I'm skipping ahead.

Pre-prod Mk 1 - my guesses

CS-80
VCS3
CP-70
1 or 2 MiniMoogs
Access or rental of a Hammond and a modular synth, plus whatever might have been at Trident at the time.

RIght on.....
Eddie bought and had hot-rodded
a C3 from Kalamazoooooooo....

Let's not forget the MUSE and the ARP 2500...

I don't think there was anything else...

Until UK mark 2......

Touring Mark 1 stuff...?

The above mentioned with the Hammond, painted black, with the D.I. modification. CP-70, CS-80, Mini Moogs, VCS3, Roland Space Echo (chorus version ?), Tangent(?) mixer. Leslies with mics (sm-57's ?) built in.

Pretty sure the riser with the built in cable harness came with the DM rig, as I dont recall seeing a Mark 1 era photo using it.

Now... was the Mark 2 pre-prod and touring rigs the same ?

YES !

GOOD STUFF !!!!!!!!!!!

The Mark 2 rig
was not so different....just some stuff added....some taken away...(?)

Some stuff linked together......

love
gogo

PS: The Korg synth I have been playing with here
is the red mini-spaceship one.
It is a CLASSIC KEYS rig with 8 custom presets
and all the effects built in.....easy, and sounds great.

It has two XLR outs, and two 1/4 inch Inputs,
so I can run the Prophet 5 and the electric violin
into it and have ONE single cable going to out the board.

This is a good thing, because I have 2 gig tonight
in 2 locations and I gotta rip this thing apart
and set it up quickly....twice....

I thought I had quit bar gigs, but this sounds like fun,
in fact 5 sets of fun.,...whew......
